Lavaux – living heritage
In 2007, the outstanding value of the Lavaux vineyard terraces gained international status through their inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This achievement recognises the hard work not only of those who built them, but also of those who live there today: the winegrowers themselves of course, as well as the local residents who continue to enhance the social, cultural and economic life of Lavaux.
Maintaining such an abundance of life and diversity in such a small territory is a huge challenge. Climbing up from the shores of the Lake, the steep, narrow lanes, hidden alleyways and old houses are a testimony to human ingenuity, making the most of the topography of this sun-drenched hillside. Lavaux villages are still closely interlinked with the vineyards and wines; as well as the many events organised all year round, there’s no shortage of cellars and other wine-tasting venues just waiting to be discovered.
Taste the wines
The bottles and/or labels of these three wines – and the wines themselves – illustrate this aspect. Usually these wines are sold only at the winegrower’s cellar, but now you can also buy in the Office des Vins Vaudois online store.

Preserving the heritage, living the present
Living and working in such a protected heritage area can be challenging. As well as being listed on the Swiss Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments (IFP) since 1977 and the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007, most of the historic winegrowing villages in Lavaux are described as being of national interest in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS). The challenge of managing the site resides in evaluating and weighing the interests and needs of all the stakeholders involved in Lavaux in such a way as to maintain these dynamic, living vineyards whilst ensuring all the natural, cultural, built, winegrowing and intangible aspects of this heritage are preserved.
