Towers protecting treasure

As early as the eleventh century, the bishops of Lausanne expressed their temporal power in the Lavaux landscape in the form of several constructions and fortifications: here are some of the largest and most recognisable. Glérolles castle, on the shores of Lake Geneva between Rivaz and St-Saphorin, boasts a square keep that dates back to the mid-thirteenth century. Near Lutry, the Bertholod tower has an unusual oval shape: It was built around 1300 by the Mayor family, holders of the hereditary magistracy of the bishop of Lausanne. Then too, there’s the enigmatic tower castle of Marsens.

The bottles and/or labels of these three wines – and the wines themselves – illustrate this aspect. Usually these wines are sold only at the winegrower’s cellar, but now you can also buy in the Office des Vins Vaudois online store.

The Marsens tower, guardian of Lavaux

Very probably erected before 1230, this imposing tower occupies a central position between Lausanne and Vevey. Located close to the village of Épesses at an altitude of 560 metres, it overlooks the lakeshore road as well as controlling access to the hinterland of Lavaux, and was undoubtedly at the heart of the episcopal territory’s defensive network.
